Here’s a conundrum: Does a killer kill because he/she is mentally ill or is that killer an evil person?
Do you believe in evil? Was the killer in Sandy Hook evil? Was the Aurora killer evil?
My favorite inspector asks this question in Jo Nesbo’s book, Police. Why do people hate? This could be extrapolated to mean Why do people kill? His colleague answers in the usual straightforward police way. She mentions jealousy, revenge for being humiliated, rejected, jilted, ridiculed or having a special person or your pride taken away from you.
Where does this fit into the Stacey Burns murder? In my opinion, her killer was evil. Her murder was a well-planned, well designed execution. Her killer was not hearing voices nor balancing on the brink of insanity. Here is where the question of why people hate or why do people kill enters into the discussion.
Evil people know exactly what they are doing. Mentally ill people do not. The killer of Stacey Burns knew exactly what he/she was doing. The Bible study killer knew what he was doing. The hate factor was fully in play; it is the key. Did the Sandy Hook shooter or the Aurora shooter hate the victims? They did not even know them.
The murderer of Stacey Burns knew and obviously hated his/her victim. It was an evil act carried out by an evil person.

It is my belief a killer of humans does so for many reasons that cannot be lumped into simply two categories. One may kill for revenge once and otherwise be a mild mannered person in all other segments of his makeup. Another may be a hit man for the mob and kill because he is paid to do so. Still another may be in a fit of jealous rage that comes and leaves on an instant. A soldier in a war kills because that is what the Government pays him to do. The hit and run drunk may kill without even knowing he is doing so. Of course some are mentally ill and others are as you said, just plain evil and killing for no other reason. Perhaps a better question is to replace the word ‘kill’ with ‘murder’. There is major difference between 1. To cause death or extinction; be fatal.
2. To commit murder. It’s a sticky situation. Just my thoughts.
I think that pointing to the fact that there are 2 reasons to kill is simplified and is a lot more complicated. I don’t believe that the person that killed Stacey meant or planned such a brutal attack. The confrontation was meant to be just that. You have to know the person very well to believe that a brutal attack turned brutal when the killer did not get the scenario that had been planned, the killer had to have felt comfortable going into Staceys house, such as a former friend or someone she had been talking to recently about personal issues, such as I need you to tell me you are going to leave my husband alone and go on with your life, or don’t show up in court and we can just call the whole thing off, those are just a couple of scenarios that could turn conversations into ugly murder, my opinion of Mulder is unless it is for a cold bloodied reason murder will occur out of rage and I believe that rage stems from lack of control,so let’s say we find a person that is used to total control in every aspect of THIER life, husband is brow beaten so because of that a rage builds up as he watches the control freak do the same to his children he has no choices about anything, but he can humiliate the controller and he would children will rebel husbands will leave the situation the wife will be enraged to the point of killing if not able to paint the perfect picture again and heaven forbid if see thinks that it is finally going back to the way she wanted and at the very last day or night it looks like it all fell apart can you imagine the hate and all the emotional feelings going on in her entire body then the what to do what to do. Sets in with finally wait til everyone leaves . Then it’s time to have a CONVERSATION about the lies and stories and time for total truth to get everything under control CONTROL.
NOW on the other hand control freaks are not limited at all we look at the last scenario it is for the same reason a control freak thinks that because they want things to be a certain way that it will be, but the taste of complete freedom is so close that Stacey throws caution to the wind thinking for once it will be her way, but sadly. It was not to be. And again someone used to being in charge took over in the only way a crazy maniac could get THIER own way again, because Stacey this time wasn’t giving in, the sad part is she did have plans for her freedom but it had nothing to do with any one in her past it was to be an entirely new future for the beautiful. Stacey Burns if the killer had just waited they would have seen she meant no harm to anyone just a new life for her and her children sad to say. I believe her mom was the only one that knew her brand new plans and she wasn’t talking to anyone.By the way if her so called best friend had stopped talking for Stacey thinking they knew her brand new plans, she quite possibly could be alive today. She was done with her past and past life and mostly past friends except for a couple of women friends. All she wanted was peace and quiet and away from the Drama only a small town can create and the people that thought they could get Stacey to do or be what they wanted her to be. She was going to be free and live her life her way. If only people didn’t have to control people. God Bless you Stacey.
